The festival started as an initiative to support the master's program in digital arts at the National Academy of Arts, which was created in 2008 and is the only specialized educational program in this field in Bulgaria. 

The first three editions of the festival were annual, and since 2011 DA Fest has become a biennial event.

Since 2019, the festival has been organized by the DA LAB Foundation, founded by the curators and organizers of the festival, Venelin Shurelov and Galina Dimitrova-Dimova, with the aim of expanding the festival's activities and organizing more regular events and initiatives in the field of digital arts in order to maintain public interest in these arts.
