Sensing the Internet
Workshop with Dimitry Morozov / vtol
This is a workshop for beginner media artists that will allow them to expand their skills in developing concepts and implementing their artistic multimedia projects.
The internet has always been a fascinating tool, and artists have sought to use this technology in various ways since its inception. In recent years, the web has become filled with all sorts of interactive and informative resources that provide gigabytes of diverse real-time information, which can be utilized by artists as a data source for their works. We can sonify ocean currents, transform air pollution statistics into generative graphics, or use solar radiation data to create light installations.
The main idea of the workshop is to explore several straightforward methods for extracting useful project-related information from various web pages: for example, reading data from scientific laboratory websites or tracking stock markets. Using tools like Python and Max/MSP, we will examine different approaches and, with the help of interesting online resources containing suitable real-time data, create prototypes of programs that will eventually enable the realization of various projects utilizing this information.
As part of the workshop, there will also be a brief overview of intriguing artistic projects from recent years that employ these or similar approaches.
