The Holes
video essay, 12 min., 2023
The Holes delves into the hidden significance of bullet holes etched into the walls of Bucharest, serving as overlooked traces of military violence from the Romanian Revolution of 1989. They are more than just physical damage - they represent a powerful form of direct memory that coexists with, and often contrasts with, official narratives, collective recollections, and modern digital technologies. The video essay explores how these physical scars act as tangible remnants of a tumultuous past, offering a direct, visceral connection to the events of December 1989. Unlike curated memorials or formalized historical accounts, the bullet holes are an unmediated testament to the conflict, embedded directly within the everyday environment of the city.
